Post Graduate Work permit

A Post-Graduation Work Permit, or PGWP, allows eligible graduates to work for most employers in Canada. Graduating from a Designated Learning Institution does not automatically qualify you.

You generally need to:

  • Complete a PGWP-eligible program lasting at least eight months
  • Maintain full-time student status, except during your final semester
  • Apply within 180 days after completing your program
  • Submit your completion letter, transcript, and valid language test
  • Meet field-of-study requirements, when applicable
  • Hold a study permit valid at some point during the 180-day application period

PGWP validity depends on your program length and passport expiry. IRCC issues permits for up to three years in eligible cases. A PGWP does not guarantee permanent residence, though qualifying work experience might support a future application.
