Permanent Resident Card
Who can apply
- You hold Canadian permanent resident status and you are physically in Canada.
- Your card has expired or will expire in less than nine months.
- You meet the permanent resident residency obligation and have no effective removal order.
Your Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) card proves your permanent resident status. You need a valid PR card or Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD), along with your valid passport or travel document, to return to Canada by air, bus, train or boat.
An expired PR card does not end your permanent resident status. Renew your card before travelling.If your card has expired or will expire within nine months, you can apply to renew it while you are in Canada.
The residency obligation is generally 730 days in Canada within the relevant five year period. Some time outside Canada counts. If you became a PR less than five years ago, different assessment rules apply. Ask us to review your travel history if you have spent significant time outside Canada.

Permanent Resident Travel Documents
If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you need a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return by commercial airplane, bus, train or boat. A PRTD usually allows a single entry to Canada. You must apply from outside Canada and submit supporting documents to demonstrate your permanent resident status and eligibility.
