LMIA
A Labour Market Impact Assessment, or LMIA, is an employer application submitted to Employment and Social Development Canada. The assessment reviews whether hiring a foreign worker will have a positive or neutral effect on Canada’s labour market.
Employers generally need to:
- Prove their business and job offer are genuine
- Offer the required prevailing wage
- Recruit Canadian citizens and permanent residents
- Follow the rules for the applicable LMIA stream
- Pay the LMIA fee without recovering it from the worker
- Meet worker protection and employer compliance requirements
A positive LMIA supports a foreign worker’s work permit application. A positive decision does not provide a work permit or guarantee IRCC approval.
